Sex and Alcohol

Sex is the thing most likely to make sensible people behave like complete idiots.

Alcohol has the same effect.

Mix them together and things can get very messy!

Alcohol and sex often go hand-in-hand. You’re out having a good time, there’s someone there you really fancy, a bit of alcohol to help you relax and give you confidence to talk to them. You’re at a party it’s ‘what you do’… drink a bit more, it’s fun… plus you might need some extra courage for what might happen…

The trouble is, alcohol and sex don’t actually go very well together.

  • Firstly, whilst alcohol will make you feel more confident it negatively affects the brain, so you start slurring your words and tripping over your feet.
  • Then there’s the fact that it clouds your judgement – there is a reason why only drunk people do karaoke…
  • When it comes to actually having sex – you are less likely to use a condom (or any other protection for that matter) when you have been drinking. Bad decision.
  • Your body stops working the way you want, so it’s very hard to get an erection. And  ladies don’t get it easy either – it is harder for her to get aroused or achieve orgasm when she is wasted.
  • Plus there is nothing less romantic than having to stop kissing someone so you can go and be sick…

On a more serious note, when you are drunk you are also making yourself very vulnerable. And it is not only young women that become vulnerable when they are under the influence. In fact, the most likely victim of a violent crime, like being mugged or assaulted, is actually a young male 16-24 years old who is drunk.

Also 1-in-3 sexual assaults involve alcohol in some way. Whether you are too drunk to keep yourself safe, or simply not recognise the situations you may find yourself in and feel unable to say no – alcohol can lead you to have sex when you may not want to.

Did you know if someone is drunk (or under the influence of other substances, including illegal drugs) they are unable to consent to sex? If you are unsure always assume that they haven’t consented, not the other way round.

If you would like to know more about rape or sexual assault read this…

If you are planning to drink, think ahead and look out for your friends, regardless of their gender or if you think they can look after themselves…

  • Make sure you’ve eaten.
  • Plan how are you getting home.
  • Are you planning on pulling?
  • How far are you willing to go?
  • Have you got protection?
  • How much are you planning to drink?
  • Who is going to look out for you?
  • Who are you looking out for?

Keep an eye out for your friends, and if they look like they’ve had too much, get them a soft drink get them to slow down. Don’t let them go off with anyone they wouldn’t when they were sober. If they do leave with someone, check who they are and check your friend gets home safely. That’s what friends do.

Whilst alcohol and sex can be lots of fun and make a good night great, sometimes they can actually make a good night something you would rather forget.
